Let's zip it up!

Not being too fond of heights, and having refused to do the Treetop Adventures in Woodhill Forest back home, I did begin to query my decision to choose Treetop Ziplining as our final Hawaiian activity - but after the briefing on how it all worked, I felt somewhat reassured :-) We'd taken our raincoats because the clouds were looking a bit black and low, and sure enough the rain started falling before we even got out of the transport. We decided to 'upgrade' to their waterproofs  because they were bigger and thicker - but also way smellier! Should have just trusted my own!

Despite the rain it was pretty fun, and we had some cosy conversations with the other participants as we huddled on the platform around the tree trunks, some 70 to 80 feet up in the air (20m to 25m). At one point we could plainly hear church bells tolling, and we all scanned the horizon with puzzled expressions. Sounds a bit like AC/DC  says I - oh it is! It's my phone! That's what happens when you put it back in your pocket before turning it off. Should have learned my lesson then - a little while later, in Steve's pocket, Safari managed to find a YouTube video following a random pocket pressing of a letter string, and it wasn't the sort of video you'd show the vicar, if you know what I mean!! Some very confused faces on the platform until Steve tracked down the source!

The sun came out to play just in time for our longest zip line - 800ft! Holy cow! Just keep looking straight ahead, don't look down when you step off - good self- advice; it had worked so far, I hoped it would continue. By the time it got to my turn I'd got used to it, but there's still a bit of a lurch when you step off into space. A very enjoyable morning, despite the damp - well, it is a tropical island after all. And when we got back the sun was shining on the boat - we needed to be able to sit by the pool one final time. That was actually easier said than done - of course it was everyone else's idea too!

We sailed from port at 2pm, earlier than from the others, so we could cruise up to look at the Napali coastline. Spectacular!

A perfect end to the most amazing 4 weeks of our lives.

Mahalo for your company, and this is the final goodbye - I really can't think there'll be anything interesting to write about 2 days of sitting in a plane!

    1. Thanks Gareth :-) They got shorter when I started having to use my phone - thank goodness I can use my laptop again - one finger typing is deadly! Hope you've got a good movie organised :-) See you soon.

  2. What a great end to your hols. Some of the pictures look as if they compared well with those in the Grand canyon. I could have had a go at zip lining last week in Queen Elizabeth Forest Park but passed it up! You two are brave I'm not! How does it compare to jumping out of planes Steve? Safe journeys home, hope the girls have made you a towel dog!

    1. Yes, it was a lovely day - although I think we would have preferred sun all day! Zip Lining seems to be the new thing everywhere these days - it's not quite as scary as it feels before you step off - definitely the climbing up the bridges and waiting around high up are a bit nervy - but you know you're well hooked up, so it's more a mind thing!
It seems as if towel animals are the thing over here - we had a new animal every day on the cruise! I've bought a DVD which shows you how to make them :-) Well, I bought it for the girls! Usually you need a towel AND a facecloth, which I didn't realise before, so not sure if they'd have been able to copy the picture I sent - let's see! xxxxxxxx

  3. How I shall miss your daily blog!!!!! It has been a real joy to read of all your activities each day. Well done for conquering your fear of the zip wire , it is such an exhilarating feeling and I only went on a small one on a Top Ten site in the Kauri forest in 2010. Thinking of you on your journey home Much love Mumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    1. I'm so glad you enjoyed sharing our trip - it was a real pleasure to go over the day again, too, and we'd often comment during the day - there's one for the blog! I was so glad I'd bought an American Sim card for my phone which included data. Although we only really used it for a navigation system before the cruise, it was our only internet on the boat - unless we bought a plan, and we would have needed a $250 one for uploading all the blog photos!! AND it was only a satellite internet, so it would have been soooooo slow. Apart from the slow typing it was really easy to do on my phone - just click on a photo from my album and it was there on the blog, even quicker than uploading on the computer. We're back on Free Wifi now in San Francisco so I've got the laptop going again, which means I can reply on the blog, rather than to an email. It's 9.45 and we've had breakfast but still need to shower; and hopefully get the hotel to look after our bags whilst we do something for the day - our flight isn't until this evening. We're just outside the airport and there's a free shuttle from the hotel, so if they won't keep our bags we'll be spending the day at the airport! Looking forward to talking to you soon. xxxxxxxxxxxxx
